AS THE WannaCry ransomware is exploiting the vulnerability of the Microsoft operating system, it is very important to update the security patches and install the latest anti-virus software, said Haji Mas Zuraime bin Haji Abdul Hamid, Senior Operations Officer of Brunei Computer Emergency Response Team (BruCERT) at the Brunei-Muara District Office.

This ransomware is sophisticated and can spread through Internet and affect computers, he told the Bulletin on the sidelines of a talk titled ‘Issues and Challenges in Cyber Security’, held for village heads and members of the village consultative councils.

“Since the attack is spreading worldwide, IT vendors are updating their anti-virus solutions to prevent it,” he said, adding that “Internet users must exercise caution and not click on suspicious links”.

BruCERT is the nation’s most trusted one-stop referral agency dealing with computer-related security incidents in Brunei Darussalam. It coordinates with local and international Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) and communicates with other international CERTs, network service providers, security vendors, government agencies, law enforcement agencies as well as other related organisations to facilitate the detection, analysis and prevention of security incidents on the Internet.
