Creative Students Rewarded For BruCERT Cybersecurity Awareness Videos

5 May 2022

Five students in the Creative Computing programme area of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) were recently rewarded by Brunei Computer Emergency Response Team (BruCERT) for producing videos that promote awareness of online safety.

The collaboration between UTB and BruCERT has been ongoing for several years, with students producing awareness videos as one of the assignments during their course of study. This annual activity aims to create online safety awareness among youth, while fostering the students’ skills and creativity and giving them an opportunity to display their talent.

From a total of 10 videos submitted, five were selected by BruCERT based on creativity, quality, and clarity of the cybersecurity awareness message.

The winning video on “How to Spot a Fake Website” was created by Ak Mohammad A’sri Yazzie Putra bin Pg Yahya. It depicted an online shopping website with unbelievable offers and highlights the telltale signs of a scam website.

In second place, a video on “The Importance of Updating Your Phone” created by Ak Mohd Akmal Muazzam bin Pg Mohd Adam Nor-Islam illustrates that regular updates protect mobile devices from the latest threats.

In third place, the video “How Can Your Device Get a Virus” by Lenita Helina Faumuina shows how easy it is to get infected with a computer virus by clicking on links, opening attachments, inserting an infected pen drive, and installing apps from unknown sources.

Two other students received consolation prizes for their videos “Things to Do Before Selling Your Phone” by Mohammad Iqbal Syafiq bin Mustapha, and “Be Aware of What You Share” by Nadziratul Nadzirah binti Ibrahim.

Winners were rewarded with cash prizes, while their videos will be broadcast on national television and on BruCERT’s social media accounts later this year as part of a nationwide public awareness campaign.
