Securing Your Desktop Computer

secure computer

Most employees get work done through desktop computers, which is why security for desktop computers is so important. If an unauthorized person gains access into your work computer, your organization’s confidential information will be at risk.

Best practices

  • Lock your desktop when you need to step away from the computer, even for just a little while. Password protecting your computer allows you to control who has access to it.
  • Use a strong password which is easy to remember but hard for anyone to guess.
  • Install firewall, antivirus and anti-spyware programs to reduce your risk of malicious attacks.
  • Make sure to install the latest updates of your software. Updates usually correct any weaknesses with a software program or an operating system.
  • If you share your computer at work, create a separate user account. Make sure the other user accounts do not have your administrative privileges.
  • Backup your data regularly and keep the copy in a separate location such as on an external hard drive or DVDs.
  • Watch out for shoulder surfers who may be able to get information by observing what you have typed into your computer.
